Bader breaks all-time 3-point record as Grizzlies fall

Travis Bader set the all-time NCAA record for 3-pointers, but Oakland University men’s basketball fell lost to the Milwaukee Panthers, 86-64, Sunday afternoon.

“It’s bittersweet,” Bader said. “It’s something that’s good for Oakland, good for our fans and everything like that. But me being the person I am, I wanted to win the game more than anything.”

Bader set the record on a shot from the corner with 6:17 left in the first half, putting the Golden Grizzlies (9-15, 4-5 Horizon) down one at 29-28. Bader missed his first attempt, but made the next four and finished the game with six total and 21 points.

“I practice those shots all the time,” Bader said. “It’s just constant repetition and confidence that I’m going to make every shot.”

The Panthers (15-9, 5-5) had all five starters reach double-figures and were led by senior Jordan Aaron, who finished with 23 points. Sophomore Matt Tiby recorded the game’s only double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds.

The Grizzlies trailed the Panthers 41-38 at halftime and were outscored by 19 points in the second half when they lost they’re shooting touch. The Grizzlies shot 80 percent from three in the first half, but ended up finishing the game just 10-of-21 from downtown.

OU head coach Greg Kampe cited the team having to leave for Milwaukee on Friday night right after a tight and high-paced outing against Youngstown State as a cause for Oakland’s late collapse.

“I kind of thought we’d be in trouble if we couldn’t keep it close,” he said.

Milwaukee was 13-of-25 from behind the arc with Austin Arians and Aaron doing most of the damage at a combined 9-for-15.

The Panthers shot 57 percent from the field while holding the Grizzlies to just 38 percent. Milwaukee also heavily out rebounded Oakland, 41-24. The Panthers are 2-0 against the Grizzlies this year after defeating OU on Jan. 8, 84-75.

Oakland returns home next Thursday, Feb. 6 to take on Cleveland State, who won the first match-up against the Grizzlies, 86-76.
