Bader Bomb barrage not enough for Grizzlies in loss

Golden Grizzly senior guard Travis Bader scored a season-high 35 points, but the Oakland University men’s basketball team (9-16, 4-6 Horizon) was defeated by the Cleveland State Vikings (16-9, 7-3), 92-85 on Thursday night.

Bader hit 10 3-pointers in the contest in his first as the all-time 3-point record holder and was recognized after the game for the first time in front of the home crowd.

“I’m very gracious that we had that post-game celebration,” Bader said. “I just wanted to win the game, a game I felt we could have won.”

After the game, a video of J.J. Redick was aired where he congratulated and “passed the torch” to Bader. Bader is now 14 threes better than the second-place Redick, with 471 career 3-point field goals.

The shots were falling for the Grizzlies early as they climbed to a 27-21 lead with under 10 minutes to go in the first half. That’s when the Viking went on an 11-0 run.

During that time, OU head coach Greg Kampe was issued a technical foul after a Duke Mondy foul where he claimed to see something the referee did not.

“Duke did not foul the guy,” Kampe said. “He hit the ball, and then the ball hit that guy’s knee and went out of bounds.

“The guy came from behind and made the call. He probably doesn’t know Duke Mondy leads the nation in steals.”

The technical led to Cleveland State taking a seven-point lead into halftime, 45-38.

After the break, the Grizzlies stormed back and even took an eight-point lead deep into the second half, but the Vikings and Charlie Lee’s 23 second-half points proved too much for Oakland.

Cleveland State shot 65 percent including 8-of-13 from long range in the second half. Viking guard John Harris put them up for good with a three from the corner with 2:38 on the game clock.

OU had a chance to make a stop and possibly tie it, but Grizzly freshman guard Kahlil Felder had two consecutive fouls to put CSU on the line and ultimately ice the game. Felder finished with 10 assists, but fouled out of the game.

The Grizzlies travel to play Valparaiso this Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2:35 p.m. OU won the first meeting on Jan. 4, 75-70.
