Men’s soccer match ends in draw
The Golden Grizzlies took the University of Illinois-Chicago to extra-time in their first Horizon League match. The game ended in a 1-1 tie thank to OU’s Matt Rickard who scored the equalizer in the 66th minute. The goal came on a long pass from teammate Cody Archibald. The Flames were last year’s Horizon League regular season champions. The Golden Grizzlies (0-5-1) face inner-state rival University of Detroit-Mercy before returning home next Saturday Oct. 4 to face Green Bay.
Women’s soccer team splits outings
The first Horizon League match for the Golden Grizzly women was last Thursday at Valparaiso where they lost 4-0 in the game. The Golden Grizzles then matched off against the Green Bay Phoenix on Sunday to win the match 2-1 in a thriller. Claudia Krupicz scored first for the Golden Grizzlies, but it was Vlad Gurovski’s 76th minute strike that put them up for good. The women are now 1-1 in Horizon League play.
Men’s golf outing canceled on final day
The Cleveland State University Invitational final round has been canceled due to weather. The event was just played as a 36-hole tournament and Oakland finished in fifth place, nine strokes behind Appalachian State.
Evan Bowser finished tied for fifth overall with a score of (-1). The team totals was 588 (+12) on the tournament Softball team drops two to Michigan teams in tournament The Oakland softball team lost to the University of Michigan 9-1 during tournament play in Traverse City.
Haley Zimmer pitched well in relief going 6.2 innings allowing three runs and four strikeouts. Erin Kownacki pitched dominantly in the team’s next game vs. Western Michigan University which ended in a 1-1 draw. In seven innings she pitch she only allowed three hits and one earned run. She also managed to gather a couple strikeouts in the contest. The softball season is set to end next Sunday where the Golden Grizzly women have a double-header vs. Macomb Community College followed by Ferris State at Oakland’s field Oct. 5.
Women’s volleyball out to hot start in Horizon League
The Oakland volleyball team started its Horizon League play with a three-set-sweep of Youngstown State 25-22, 25-18, 25-18. Melissa Deatsch had 17 kills and teammate Ciara Schultz had 30 assists and nine digs to lead the team in both stats. The team traveled straight from there to Cleveland State where the won the match in a five-set thriller. Cassie Peloni joined Deatsch in the match to lead with 15 kills apiece. Taylor Humm was great defensively for the Grizzlies earning 23 digs in the contest.
