Oakland defeats injury-ridden Wright State
Dayton, Ohio- The Oakland University men’s basketball team defeated Wright State University 76-67 on Wednesday night.
Corey Petros paced the Golden Grizzlies with 17 points and eight rebounds in the effort. Max Hooper also recorded 17 points including 5-10 from beyond the arc.
Kahlil Felder added nine points and six assists, continuing to lead the Horizon League in assists on the year.
Freshman Grant Benzinger finished with 31 points for Wright State on 9-20 shooting. Justin Mitchell also added 18 points. The rest of the team scored 18 for an injury plagued Raiders squad.
The victory moved Oakland’s record to 14-14 and 9-4 in the Horizon League, clinching a top four seed in the league tournament and a first round bye.
With three games to play, Oakland still has a statistical chance of earning the number one seed in the tournament, but it would require three straight losses from league leader Valparaiso and losses for Cleveland State and Green Bay.
Sitting in fourth with Wednesday’s victory, Oakland will continue to look to move up as the three seed has a significantly easier path to the championship. With the four seed, Oakland would likely end up playing Detroit again.
The remaining games for Oakland are two home games against UIC on Sunday and Youngstown State on Wednesday, February 25. The final game is February 28 at Green Bay.
