Baseball at Toledo

The Golden Grizzlies (3-19, 1-2 HL) fell to the University of Toledo Rockets (6-19, 0-3 MAC) 8-5 on Wednesday, March 29.

Connor Fannon struck out a career-high seven batters in five innings, allowing three earned runs.  Spencer Yankle got the Golden Grizzlies on the board first with an RBI-single in the top of the second inning. The Rockets responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Tyler Pagano drove in his 13th RBI of the season during the third inning with a base hit, and Mike McGee followed with two runs in the fourth inning to give Oakland a 4-3 lead.  In the sixth inning, Tyler Trovinger was walked with the bases loaded, extending Oakland’s lead to two runs, but Toledo scored five unanswered runs to come away with the win.

The Black and Gold play against Central Michigan University at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5 at CMU.

Baseball at Wright State

What was supposed to be the baseball team’s home-opener series on Friday March 31, was relocated to Wright State due to weather and field conditions.  The Golden Grizzlies headed to Dayton, Ohio for a three-game series with the reigning Horizon League champs.

The Raiders took the series opener on Friday March 31 8-3 over the Golden Grizzlies.  Conor Bowers threw his first quality start of the season, pitching seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five batters.  Oakland’s three runs in the game came from two Wright State errors  in the eighth inning.

Game two went into extra innings as the Golden Grizzlies fell again to the Raiders 13-9.  Tyler Palm started on the mound for Oakland, pitching five innings and allowing 7 runs.  The Golden Grizzlies remained scoreless through the first four innings until Ryan Fitzgerald’s RBI-single drove in Drew Demumbrum.  Demumbrum went 5-for-5 throughout the game, with three doubles, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.  Oakland was unable to rally in extra innings after giving up six runs in the top of the 1oth.

In the series finale, Jake Lee tossed the first 4.1 innings after missing his usually Friday start because of an injury.  Lee allowed six runs, five earned, and ten hits with three strikeouts in his performance.  Nate Schweers came in relief for Lee giving up three hits and no runs in his 3.2 innings pitched.  Nick Parr gave up one run in the game’s final inning, bringing Wright State’s total to seven.

The Golden Grizzlies offense was unable to get anything going, however, scoring no runs to Wright State’s seven and Oakland fell to Wright State 7-0 to end the series.

Men’s golf at Indiana

Oakland traveled to Indiana University to compete in the Hoosier Invitational at the IU golf club on Saturday, April 1-2. At the end of day one, Jake Kneen had a two-round team best 143 (+1), putting him in a tie for 17th place.

On the final day of the competition, Oakland and the University of Evansville tied for 10th place with a team score of 882 (+30). Kneen once again shot a team best, 72 (+1), bringing his overall score to 215 and putting him in a tie for 12^th place.  Chris Handy tied for 39th place, and Jacob Johnson tied for 46th place with 220 on April 1 and 222 points on April 2.

Men’s golf will next travel to Pennsylvania State to compete in the Rutherford Intercollegiate on April 15-16.

Track and field at Miami Duals

The Black and Gold sent individual athletes to compete in the Miami Duals at the University of Miami-Ohio on Saturday, April 1.

For the men, Brandon Davis and Matthew Jordan placed first and second, respectively, in the triple jump. Davis recorded a jump of 46 feet, 4.25 inches, while Jordan recorded 45 feet, 10 inches. Jordan also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 7.75 inches, while Gino Vitella placed second in shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 7.75 inches.

For the women, Sarah Moen placed third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.91, and Laura Johnston placed fourth with 14.94. Andrea Koenigsknecht placed fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:06.01), and Terri Brown placed fourth in javelin (105 feet, 10 inches).

Women’s golf

The Golden Grizzlies traveled to Indiana to compete in the Fort Wayne Spring Classic Sunday April 2-3. In the first round of competition, Oakland recorded a team score of 293 (+9), the lowest team round in school history. Kylee Sullivan and Madelyn Zack both scored career lows of  147 (+5) and 148 (+6), respectively.

On the final day of the Spring Classic, the Black and Gold took first place with a team score of 895 (+43). This score broke the 54-hole school record by 11 strokes, and was the first time in program history the team shot 53-holes under 900. Sullivan also made history by becoming the third player to win multiple tournaments in a single season. She finished first in the individual title in the tournament with a score of 222 (+9) a career low.

Oakland will be heading to Bowling Green State University next to compete in the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational Saturday, April 8-9.
