Oakland loses to fifth ranked Virginia Cavaliers
Charlottesville, VA- Oakland men’s basketball (8-5) fell to the no. 5 ranked Virginia Cavaliers (11-1) 71-58 on Wednesday night.
Star point guard Kahlil Felder had his hot hand throughout the first half, finishing with 17 points on 6 of 14 shooting, and adding three assists.
Oakland finished the first half on a 7-0 run and entered halftime with a 29-28 lead.
Virginia began the second half on fire, opening on a 10-2 run and forcing Oakland to turn the ball over five times in the first four minutes.
It was all Cavaliers after that, gaining a 20-point lead at different times in the second half. Oakland managed to cut the lead to 13 to finish the game.
Kahlil Felder scored his 30th point late in the second half after the game had already been decided and he then proceeded to sit out the final minute.
Max Hooper finished with nine points for the Golden Grizzlies. Jalen Hayes had eight rebounds.
The telling stat from the game is quite clear: Virginia forced 16 turnovers and Oakland had only five assists.
Forward Anthony Gill led the Cavaliers with 17 points and added five rebounds.
Senior forward Mike Tobey, who had only scored 12 points total in his previous five games, finished with 16 against Oakland. He grabbed seven rebounds for good measure.
Oakland will return home to begin conference play on Saturday against Cleveland State at 3 p.m.
