Student Spotlight: Ashley Fredericks
Oakland University prides itself on having well-rounded students who not only excel academically but are also active in the community.
Ashley Fredericks is a junior in the School of Health and Sciences who one day hopes to become a dentist.
Fredericks is an active member of Alpha Delta Pi and holds the position of fundraising chair for the Panhellenic council as well as attends Greek Intervarsity meetings.
She is involved in Global Medical Brigades where she holds the position of secretary and treasurer. The group is planning a trip to Nicaragua in May.
While being extremely active in student organizations, Fredericks does volunteer work at Crittenton Hospital in the ultrasound department, works as a hygiene assistant at University Dental Associates and is a member of the freshman honor society Alpha Lambda Delta.
“Being involved has given me numerous opportunities and leadership skills that will be useful in my future career and any endeavor I want to conquer,” Fredericks, said.
When asked about the hardest part of being active on campus Fredericks mentioned that time management is critical. She stays organized by making lists and prioritizing important tasks.
“I know that eventually everything will get done if I take things one step at a time,” Fredericks said. “I want to make the most of my college years, be as involved as possible.”
Co-worker Anne Marie Gavlinski is often a source of positive energy for Fredericks when needed.
“Ashley has a part-time job, excels in school and is involved in extracurricular activities,” Gavlinski said. “It is to be commended.”
Fredericks believes that students organizations are for everyone.
“You do not have to be involved with every one, but there is at least one organization for everyone,” she said.
Fredericks advice to students looking to get more involved on campus with student organizations is to just go for it.
She encourages others to check out the Center for Student Activities Office in the basement of the OC and get a list of student organizations on campus. She mentions that is important that students are not afraid to ask other involved students for tips and advice.
“The biggest risk in life is to not take any at all and the hardest part is coming out of your comfort zone,” Fredericks said.
