Looking for something new and exciting to do on the weekend?

Escape the Room Detroit, an interactive adventure game, opened last week.

Groups are locked in a room where they have 60 minutes to find hidden objects, figure out clues and solve increasingly difficult puzzles in order to escape.

There are currently three rooms with two different scenarios to choose from. One is called The Agency, where up to 10 players work under pressure on a top secret mission. The newest is called The Dig, which is about an archeological dig and can have up to 8 players, according to the website.

Victor Blake, the founder and CEO, said that an additional room and scenario is planned, according to the Detroit Free Press.

If there are only a few people in the party, they will be teamed up with other groups.

And while it would certainly make things more urgent, don’t worry about being stuck in the building for the rest of eternity. People will be let out if they don’t finish in time.

Maria Macauley, a junior majoring in nursing, recently went for her first time. She said she had no idea what to expect but soon realized how fun it was.

“Once we started getting the clues and figuring things out, everyone got more into it,” she said. “We all worked together, even though some of us were complete strangers, and it was such a cool experience.”   

Only 20 percent of people make it out in the time limit. Even then, they usually need the hints that eventually appear on a screen, according to Fox 2 Detroit. The current record is 32 minutes.

Escape the Room began in New York City in 2013. This is the 11^th location and first in Michigan, with others in major cities like Boston and Washington D.C.

“Escape the Room is for people looking for a different experience. It’s not the usual dinner and a movie kind of night – you’re the one driving the action,” said Blake in a press release.

Some celebrities have participated, such as Kylie Jenner, Jaden Smith, Tina Fey and Neil Patrick Harris, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Escape the Room would be a good team building activity for any OU organization.

“The game is designed for intense cooperation and working together,” said the Escape the Room website.

Participants can also book Escape the Room for special events like birthdays. According to the website, they can make the experience special and tailored to how many people are in the party.

“I think everyone should try it at least once. It’s just so different than what people normally do around here,” Macauley said.

It is located at 1030 Randolph, in Detroit. Tickets cost $28 per person and must be purchased online ahead of time.

It is open Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays 6 p.m. to midnight, and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 10 p.m.

So maybe this weekend, skip the “Friends” reruns and take part in this one-of-a-kind experience.
