Mouthing Off: Babies are for loving, not accessorizing

A Tennessee woman’s deep family ties inspired us when we read about her decision to strap her newborn baby to the train of her dress during her wedding. Brides attempting to do something creative on their wedding day is nothing new, but this southern belle may have taken creativity a bit too far.

If she wanted the infant to be a part of her special day, there were many safer and less hilarious choices. She could have had someone hold the baby, pushed the baby down the aisle in a fancy stroller, or held the baby herself. Possibilities are endless, but they really stifle creativity.

It makes us wonder what modes of transportation she had planned for the baby on their honeymoon. Did she plan on strapping the baby to the hood of her car with bungee cords like a deer? If they were splurging and taking a plane, was she planning on keeping her nice and cozy by sticking her up in the overhead compartment?

All jokes aside, we really think that we could top her. Picture this: a flaming chariot pulled by a squad of 47 feral cats, all in varying stages of life and differing fur color pulling me (Hailey, the bride) down the aisle.

I (Josh, the groom) will be wearing a suit crafted from the finest lion’s mane we could find on Craigslist. I will await my cue (a high-pitched note only the king of the jungle can hear) from the big burly pianist, then splash through the stained glass window, showering the patrons with jagged, tetanus-inducing confetti. Thanks for coming, guys.

The Tennesee woman’s wedding stunt wasn’t criticized by everyone, thoughjust almost everyone. Some of her guests said it was “enchanting” and “too cute.” Maybe they were sipping some of that Tennessee whiskey during the ceremony, or maybe they were unaware that traditional wedding practices do not call for strapping a child to the veil of your dress. I don’t know.

The woman even took to social media to share her tasteful(ly awful?) photos. One extremely impressed wedding guest used the photos on Facebook as a means to express her appreciation.

“Shona and Jonathan Brooks, your wedding dress was super perfect; from the groom and his men and you and your diva’s baby; you rock the gown and the princess tagging behind you it brought tears to my eyes,” the guest wrote on Facebook.

Maybe we just don’t understand fashion anymore. Auburn Hills/Pontiac are not exactly what we would call the fashion capitals of the world. Maybe this is the beginning of another questionable trend emerging from the South.

Some of these wonderful trends to come out of the South recently are dances like the “Stanky Legg,” the “Booty Dew” and the “Booty Chicken Fried Steak.” We aren’t making these up. Seriously. Google it.

Hopefully involving infants in events, such as weddings, in crazy ways is not a trend that continues. It’s admirable that our celebrity of the week is a proud mother who wants to include her child in such an important, life-changing event, but a baby as an accessory is so last season.
