Tri-captains look to continue off last season’s success

The Oakland University men’s lacrosse team may not be the most well known team on campus, but they definitely are one of the most successful.

These Grizzlies won national titles from 2002 to 2004, and took the CCLA A League division crown in 2004 and 2006.

Plus, they’ve never had a losing season.

This year, the Grizzlies are led by captains senior Matt Kassa, junior Scott Glowacz and senior Dave Mercure, all whom are returning players from last year’s team, which finished third in the CCLA with a 7-4 record.

The 2008 team will travel to Pittsburgh, West Virgina, Indiana and Miami, Ohio.

Eight starters return this year with the majority of the team being underclassmen.

“We have a lot of young guys on the team who may not be the best lacrosse players, but they all want to learn and work really hard,” said Kassa, the team’s goalie.

The team’s regular season is from February to April, with the CCLA Tournament at Pittsburgh beginning in May.

“Our goal isn’t to win nationals,” Kassa said “Our goal is to have a winning season and then go from there.”

With rival teams such as Michigan State, University of Michigan and Central Michigan University, the Grizzlies definitely have their work cut out for them.

“The competition is intense,” said long stick midfielder Scott Glowacz. “Teams like these have more guys on their team so they always have fresh legs, which makes it very tough,”

Even though the competition is tough, the Grizzlies showed that they could hold their own when they defeated Michigan State 14-3 in a game that got them into the nationals tournament in 2006.

The Grizzlies are coached by Ron Hebert and assistant coach Nick Panas.

OU men’s lacrosse home games are played at Notre Dame Prep High School in Pontiac.Â
