I Commute From … Lake Orion

Senior Chris Hagan commutes from Lake Orion, a place he describes, first and foremost, as a quiet place to live.

Hagan, a journalism major, said he’s driven the same boring, ten-minute route to campus every day since he started at Oakland University as a freshman.

“It’s just three roads. That’s pretty fool- proof,” he said. “Lapeer to Silverbell to Squirrel Rd.”

The village of Lake Orion boasts a population of over 2,700 residents.

It is also the one-time home of many notable people, including the infamous Jimmy Hoffa, musician Alice Cooper, and former Detroit Tigers pitcher Mickey Lolich, who once owned a doughnut shop in town.

“Lake Orion greets you on M-24 with two signs on the opposite sides of town. The signs read, ‘Welcome to Lake Orion, where living is a vacation,'” Hagan said. “I don’t think they could have chosen a more cliché saying that is farther from the truth,” he joked.

As for a suggestion of a place to go for food and a good time, Hagan recommends Sagebrush Cantina, a Mexican restaurant in downtown Lake Orion.

“If you can get a table, the food and the atmosphere are amazing,” he said.

Hagan, a graduate of Lake Orion High School, says he is proud of where he comes from.

“There is a lot of Lake Orion pride. Much of it stems from football season, which is huge in our town,” Hagan said. “You can see “LO” stickers on cars and homes everywhere, and that stands for a lot more than just Lake Orion. It’s your roots, your friends, your school, and your team.”
