OUSC and SPB host Carnaval Brasileiro

Oakland University Student Congress came together with the Student Program Board to present Carnaval Brasileiro Feb. 4.

Students were surrounded with the sounds of the Chicago Samba Band, who performed authentic Brazilian music to add to the atmosphere of the night.

“We wanted to expose students to a different culture than they’re used to,” said Maria Arellano, Multicultural Affairs Director of OUSC. “We wanted to bring students of all nationalities together to celebrate.”

The night also included various performances by Brazilian dance group Samba 1. Students also learned new dances ranging from classic samba to Brazilian funk.

“The timeliness of the Carnaval is great.” Dezarea Wade, Diversity Director of SPB, said. “The actual Carnaval is this time of the year down in Brazil.”

Prizes were given away for the best dancers of the night.

“Oakland has such a diverse campus,” Wade said. “Music, dancing and food are always a great way to bring people together to have fun.”
