Saturday afternoon at the O’rena was the place to be as the Women’s basketball team absolutely annihilated the Detroit Mercy Titans in another installment of this exciting Metro Series Showdown.
The Golden Grizzlies were rocking offensively and defensively and took down the Titans 83-50. Led by senior forward Leah Somerfield, who had a double double with 27 points and 18 rebounds. For Oakland, this was one of their most impressive outings all season long.
Head coach Jeff Tungate was pleased on how his team played and wants to continue this moment.
“I thought we really competed, I thought we did a really good job of the inside out attack and Leah Somerfield obviously had a great game” Tungate said. “All and all I thought we really competed for 40 minutes and I’m really really proud of our basketball team.”
Somerfield led Oakland in scoring with 27, Sha’keya Graves was right behind her with 20 and Cierra Bond kept up her offensive production with 15 of her own. Defensively, Somerfield had 18 rebounds and three blocks, meanwhile Korrin Taylor had four steals.
The rivalry has been a tough one for the women’s team as of late as they have lost the last three meetings with the Titans before saturday’s game. With revenge on their mind, the Black and Gold played with heart and passion all the way to the finish.
“The girl’s played with a great desire to win and compete, more importantly I think our team just had fun on the court” Tungate said. “It was fun to see and it was good to see us get back to what we are capable of doing and now we have to get ready for a good Youngstown State team.”
As coach Tungate said, after this important win over arch-rivals Detroit Mercy, the Golden Grizzlies will be taking on Youngstown State on the blacktop this coming Thursday Feb. 1.
