Comics: The Best Scares

It is almost that time of the year again- Halloween- the time to watch all the scary movies one can brave through and eat all the candy their stomach can handle. And, while Halloween is a great time for these activities and traditions, there are many Halloween related comics one can read to get a fan into the festive mood.

Whether it is gruesome guts-n-blood, or an old fashioned ghost story, there is a comic story for everyone looking for a freight. Now, in the golden age of independent comics- many fans are turning away a little from superheroes and are beginning to read some great horror comics.

Wytches– A horror/monster comic, centered around a young family- Sailor and her mother Lucy and father Charlie move from their old home to a new one, in the hopes that Sailor will have an easier time fitting in at a new school than she did at her old one. Sailor, having once been attacked by a friend, shot and killed her attacker and has since been plagued by nightmares.

One night, while dreaming about the night she was attacked, Sailor and her family wake up to witness a strange figure lurking in the forest behind their yard, before Sailor is grabbed and taken deep into the woods. Now, Charlie and Lucy have to find their daughter at any cost against the immortal, human eating monsters known as “The Wytches.”

Nailbitter– A horror/suspense comic- a small town in Oregon is known to the world as the “The Serial Killer Capital of the USA.” Every decade or so, this small town produces another crazy homicidal maniac, each with their own strange calling card or characteristic that makes them memorable.

Now, FBI agent Warren returns to his hometown in Oregon from having previously moved in order to investigate a slew of strange, incredibly gruesome murders that had recently taken place, as well as investigate why the town creates so many killers. So, with the help from a young officer and a ‘rehabilitated’ serial killer known as “Nailbiter”- due to his consumption of his victims nails after their murder- Warren sets out to learn the mystery of the town and its darkest secrets.

The Walking Dead– Perhaps the most well known comic on this list- The Walking Dead is a horror comic centered around sheriff deputy, Rick Grimes, and his constant struggle to keep his family, friends and self safe from the threats produced by a zombie apocalypse.

After waking up from a coma a few weeks/months after the zombie outbreak began, Rick is faced with finding his loved ones and bringing them to safety, all the while killing the zombies and, more threatening, the people in his way.

The Walking Dead is also an extremely popular television show, created by AMC.

There are also plenty of superhero comics that delve into the horror genre as well (check out my review of Batman: Death of the Family for perhaps the best example), but this is just a short list of some of the modern horror-comic greats.

Happy Halloween!
