COLUMN: To make it brief: Vote in the elections

By

Every year, as you may already know, there is an election that determines who will become the next Student Body President, Vice President and all of the Legislators that help make your voice heard. For president and VP, the process begins with a duo that decide that they want to make Oakland University a better place through commitment to the student body, leadership to the community and dedication to the university as a whole.

COLUMN Leading with authenticity

In the past, I’ve written about getting involved, I’ve written about why it’s important to be a visionary, I’ve written about representing the students and I’ve written about student organizations that are making a difference. For this week’s column, I’d like to write about what it means to lead with authenticity — what it means to be a part of an organization where authenticity is important to being successful.

The mission statement of SPB states they strive to enhance student life by providing high quality, diverse programs, activities and events for the OU community. COLUMN: Make a difference: Run for president, VP, legislator

By

In my previous articles this school year, I’ve highlighted different aspects of how to do that, including people that you can (and should) talk to, places you can (and should) go and see, and organizations that you can (and should) talk to. But today, I’m going to tell you why you should run for Student Body President, Vice President, or become a legislator.

COLUMN: Finding your niché at Oakland University

By

In fact, it’s the best time to be at Oakland University because of how easy it is to get involved. Many people will tell you how the beginning of the school year is the easiest time to meet new people and get involved but if you ask me, I’d say right now is.

Chase your dreams at Oakland University

By

After attending the new student convocation and hearing everyone speak at the podium to an O’rena filled with fresh minds that are ready to be cultivated, I took a few things from it. But one of the most important things that I took from it was from Mary Beth Snyder, the vice president for student affairs and enrollment engagement. She said, in far more words, to follow your dreams.

COLUMN: Get involved at OU – or else

By

When I came to Oakland University as a freshman, I didn’t really have much of a direction. I didn’t have goals or aspirations as a student, other than academics. I didn’t get involved right away and certainly missed out on many opportunities to learn and grow because of it. But over the last few, very short years, I’ve learned getting involved is everything in a college student’s life. So with this, I encourage you to get involved.

Putting emphasis on the students

By

With help from the students who are getting involved, the Legislators and Executive Board members are working on initiatives to help bring more of a vibrant outlook to the people who mean the most on campus: the students and the student organizations that are bringing this campus the best representation and entertainment.

COLUMN: OUSC seeks to create an atmosphere full of creativity, culture

We talked about what we would want people to remember us for 10 years down the road. We talked about what kinds of things we can do now for the students at Oakland University, or what we can do now that will affect the students in five years. Mostly, we talked about the things we are doing that will give people the opportunity to get involved and let their voices be heard. We asked ourselves what a vision is. What defines a vision? Is it where we see ourselves at the end of a set time period? Is it the things we want to accomplish while we’re in office? Is it something nobody really holds a lot of weight with?

In just a few short days, the semester will come to an end, signaling the end of the Ben Eveslage/Elisa Malile administration for the Oakland University Student Congress. In all honesty, the last year has flown by so fast. But not without a little bit of excitement for where Oakland University is now compared to a year ago.
