Local jazz artist brings voice to Varner Hall

Oakland County resident Kathy Kosin’s jazz voice is world-renowned. She will perform at Varner Recital Hall at 8 p.m. Thursday. Tickets, available at Varner Box Office, are $7 for students and $11 for general admission.

Father, son jazz players share the stage

There’s a joke among guitar players that a bassist is their “seventh string.” Jazz guitarist Steve Brown used to joke around with his wife that he would “grow his own bass player” if he could. The joke became reality when they had a son, Miles, who grew up to play bass guitar. The Browns will perform together again Thursday at Oakland University with the Oakland Jazz Quartet, which Miles is a member of. It’ll be far from their first shared performance.

Accelerate Michigan Student Idea Competition offers $25,000

Individuals or teams of any size must submit a one-page business plan by Oct. 22. Lauren Bigelow, a member of Accelerate Michigan’s media outreach team and executive director of the competition, said business plans should be concise, tout the advantages of the idea, describe its potential market, and explain how the idea will be put into action.

Goo Goo Dolls treat DTE like home

The Goo Goo Dolls were at home Sunday evening. At least they felt at home. The boys from Buffalo, N.Y., gave plenty of shout outs to Detroit during Sunday night’s performance at DTE Energy Music Theater in Clarkston, Mich.
