The Blitz for April 28 to May 3

Here are all of the Golden Grizzly Athletics events the Post did not cover with a specific story from April 28 to May 3.

Baseball (19-17, 9-7, fourth in the Horizon League) 

W 7-3 vs. Rochester College: Brett Impemba went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Ian Yetsko hit his third home run of the season, a two-run blast in the bottom of the first. The Golden Grizzlies drew seven walks.

L 5-2 at Wright State: Ryan Fitzgerald went 2-for-4 with one RBI. The Golden Grizzlies hit .200.

L 14-4 at Wright State: Mike Brosseau went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Wright State out-hit Oakland 14-9. It was the first time this season that the Golden Grizzlies lost both games of a doubleheader.

W 3-0 at Wright State: Tyler Palm threw a complete-game shutout, the first of his career and the first on the program since Tim Koons in 2014. Palm was named Oakland Student Athlete of the Week for the feat. He struck out seven and allowed two hits and one walk. Oakland hadn’t beaten Wright State since 2004, a losing streak of 18 games. The Raiders hit .071.

Palm and Brosseau were named Horizon League co-Pitcher of the Week and Batter of the Week, respectively, Palm for the complete game and Brosseau for hitting .474 over five games with five RBIs.

Oakland plays at Western Michigan at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 4.

Track and field

Hillsdale Gina Relays: George O’Connor took first in the 1500m with 3:55.42. Sammy Mondry took first in the women’s 3000m with 10:13.29. David Mittlebrun took fifth in the pole vault with 14 ft., 3.25 in. Natalie Stone tied for tenth in the high jump with a personal record of 5 ft., .50 in.

The Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship is May 6-8 at Valparaiso.

Softball (13-28, 8-11, sixth in the Horizon League)

L 3-2 at Valparaiso: Abbey Walewski robbed Valpo of a walk-off with a catch in the seventh to force it to extra innings, but Valpo got that walk-off in the 11th. Danielle Szajna went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run. Haley Zemmer pitched 10 ⅔ innings and allowed one earned run. She got three strikeouts.

W 7-6 at Valparaiso: Zemmer pitched five innings, got two strikeouts and allowed two hits in this tight game, her ninth win of the season. She also went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Oakland scored four in the sixth.

L 3-2 at Valparaiso: Kelsie Swanson went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. Valpo out-hit the Golden Grizzlies 10-4. Kaley Waalkes pitched 6 ⅔ innings and got seven strikeouts.

W 8-4 at Green Bay: Zemmer went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and pitched seven innings, striking out one and allowing eight hits. Mikayela Marciniak got two RBIs.

L 5-4 at Green Bay: Szajna went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Brittney Miller went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Oakland plays UIC at the Oakland Softball Field at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, May 6 and follows it up with a doubleheader at the same place the next day with games at 1 and 3:30 p.m. ET.
