ESPN announced today that the Oakland University men’s basketball team will host Morehead State Feb. 23 as part of the Ramada BracketBuster series. The game will be 5 p.m. in the O’rena.
This will be the second straight year that the Golden Grizzlies (11-13, 6-4 Summit League) compete in an ESPN BracketBuster game, losing to Illinois State (79-75) on the road last season. While this is the last year of the BracketBuster series, OU will make a return trip to Morehead State (11-13) in a later season.
Morehead State is currently 5-5 in the Ohio Valley, being led by senior forward Milton Chavis with 11 points per game. The Eagles have struggled on the road this season, going 3-10.
Oakland head coach Greg Kampe was very pleased with the announcement, tweeting, “We get Morehead State. A good name, won an NCAA tourney game 2 years ago and had a first round draft pick! Great game for us.”
In the 2011 NCAA tournament, Morehead State pulled a huge upset as a 13 seed, beating the Louisville Cardinals, a 4 seed that year. That season they were led by Kenneth Faried, the player Kampe was referencing as the first round draft pick. Faried was selected 22nd overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. Faried currently is a starter for the Nuggets as their power forward.
Despite the name, the game will not be televised on ESPN. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.
