First of all, I commend you for writing this article. Personally I think it's a huge deal when a story such as this appears in media dialogue especially that of a college paper/magazine.

However, I must say that I disagree with some of the comments sited in your article. First the topic of being \brainwashed\ into becoming or being a feminist, is personally a insult to feminism and those of us who are feminist. Making this statement seems to imply that there is something wrong or backward with being a feminist, and that just isn't true. Secondly, there are many contradictions within the article itself. You say that feminism needs to focus more on the future rather than on the past. I'm not trying to be harsh, but if you've taken a WGS course then you'd know that the past is not the sole purpose of study. We do actually focus very much on the future of feminism, but it is necessary for us to study the past in order to understand the future. It seems that you try to explore this in the next portion of the article by saying that we have taken for granted the struggles of second wave feminism, but again this contradicts your statement about neglecting the past and focusing on the future. Lastly, I would like to bring to your attention the statement about men being the enemy. Feminism does not say that men are the enemy, contrary to how it is portrayed in the media, feminism is not about male bashing. Feminism is about fighting patriarchal society and bringing attention to women who have been marginalized. We fight for equality no matter a persons race, class, or gender. It is not about bringing down men, in fact there are men who are feminist. Please don't confuse sex and gender equality with male bashing because they are in fact two different things, feminism seeks to strive for the former, not preach the latter.

Again, I credit you for writing the article. I think that regardless of the articles content you definitely wrote something that has created a conversation about feminism, and conversation is always the starting point for change. Please understand that I did not write this to hurt you or insult you, my point here is to educate you (for lack of a better word) as well as others, as to what feminism is all about.

I feel quite the same, Katie. I used to say, "I believe in equal rights, but I'm not a feminist." Feminism is not a negative. I am a conservative, pro-life woman who believes in equality for all life. I am a feminist.
I'm also in agreement that we need to hold ourselves accountable as much as we hold society accountable. We need to stop exploiting ourselves and do something good with the freedoms we've been afforded.

The power is in our hands and it's our responsibility to use it wisely.

PS Katie, it takes a lot more courage to put your thoughts out there for the world to see than it does for one person to put them down. Keep writing and stand proud!

Frank, I'm pretty sure you're insulting me, but I will ignore the slight. I'm very proud of my work, and the fact that I work at a college newspaper that produces college-level material.

Thank you Jonell, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
