Baseball at Valpo: Game 1

Oakland baseball traveled to Valparaiso University for a three-game series April 13-15. In the first game, Connor Fannon started on the mound and went five innings, picking up five strikeouts. Emerson Misch and Tyler Pagano led the Golden Grizzlies’ offense with two RBIs each.

Oakland struck first in the third inning off a two-run home run by Misch, then tacked on another run in the fourth inning from Tyler Trovinger’s solo home run. In the fifth inning, Valpo got on the board with two runs, but Oakland responded with two runs of its own in the sixth.

The Black and the Gold added one more run bringing its total to six. Valpo put up five runs to pull ahead of Oakland and held on to win 7-6.

Baseball at Valpo: Game 2

In the second game, starting pitcher Tyler Palm went seven innings, allowing just one earned run. At the plate, Misch went 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Pagano brought in four RBIs, including a three-run home run.

Oakland got on the board first in the first inning with Pagano’s home run. Valpo cut the lead by adding one run in the bottom of the first inning and another in the third. Zach Sterry then added one run in the fifth inning with a solo home run. The next run for Valpo came in the eighth inning, bringing the score to 4-3.

In the top of the ninth, Tyler Janish tripled to score a run, and Pagano recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-3 Golden Grizzlies. Valpo scored three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and send the contest into extra innings.

Oakland quickly responded with three runs in the top of the tenth inning and held on to win 9-6.

Baseball at Valpo: Game 3

In the final game of the series, Jake Lee went 4.2 innings on the mound with six strikeouts. Offensively, Janish went 3-for-5, including a grand slam to give him a total of five RBIs.

Sterry recorded his second multiple-home-run game of the season with a solo home run in the fourth inning and a two-run home run in the seventh inning to continue his nine-game hitting streak.

Pagano also extended his hit streak to nine games and recorded a home run. He has hit a home run in every game of the last five. Oakland struck first with fourth runs in the first inning. The Crusaders then added one run in both the second and third innings.

In the fourth inning, the Black and Gold broke the gap open with nine runs. Valpo quickly responded with six runs in the fifth inning, moving the score to 13-8. The Golden Grizzlies tacked on one run in the sixth inning, three in the seventh and two in the ninth.

With a late-game rally, Valpo added one final run in the ninth. Oakland came out on top with a score of 19-9 to take the series 2-1.

Softball at Wright State: Game 1

Oakland softball traveled to Wright State for a three-game series April 14-15. In the first game, Erin Kownacki went five innings on the mound. Kelsie Swanson led the offense, going 3-for-3 with one RBI.

Mikayela Marciniak added the other Oakland run off of an RBI double. Wright State got on the board first in the first inning. The Golden Grizzlies responded in the fourth with an RBI single from Swanson.

WSU tallied two more runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth, pushing the score to 4-1. In the top of the seventh, Lyndsay Hill doubled, followed by a RBI double from Marciniak to cut the lead in half.

However, the Golden Grizzlies could not hold on and were topped by WSU 4-2 for the first game.

Softball at Wright State: Game 2

Haley Zemmer started in the circle for the second game of the series and went all seven innings. She recorded six strikeouts and allowed just two runs. On the other side of the plate, Jamie Squires led the team with three RBIs, and Marciniak followed close behind with two.

Oakland struck first with a two-run home run from Squires in the third inning. In the fifth, WSU got on the board with three runs and added one more in the sixth inning to make the score 4-2.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Golden Grizzlies broke the score open with four runs coming off of a double from Marciniak, a double from Squires and a single from Swanson. Oakland held on to win 6-4.

Softball at Wright State: Game 3

In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Kownacki went three innings and picked up one strikeout. Kaley Waalkes came in relief in the fourth inning and recorded fourth strikeouts.

Jamie Squires and Lauren Pletscher each added two RBIs, with Brittney Miller bringing in a run.

Oakland got on the board first in the second inning with two runs off an RBI single from Pletscher. Wright State quickly answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second inning, two runs in the third and 3 in the fourth.

Oakland racked up two runs in the fifth inning from a two-run home run from Squires and one final run in the seventh inning. WSU topped Oakland 7-5 in the final game of the series.

Men’s golf at Rutherford Intercollegiate Tournament

On day one of the Rutherford Intercollegiate Tournament at University Park in Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 15, Oakland finished round one in 12th place with a score of 299 (+15).

After round two, the Golden Grizzlies moved to fifth place with a combined score of 583 (+15). Jacob Johnson carded a 2-under par 140. He finished the day with a score of 68 (-3), tying for a tournament best and tying for second overall. Johnson (T2/140) led the Golden Grizzlies in the top 50 with Marc Norton (T16/146), Jake Kneen (41/150) and Chris Handy (T46/151) following close behind.

On day two, Oakland men’s golf team finished third overall with a score of 876 (+24). The Golden Grizzlies had four golfers finish in the top 25. Johnson led, finishing T4 carding a 214 (+1). Handy, Norton, and Kneen all finished T22 with a score of 222 (+9).

Softball at University of Detroit Mercy: Game 1

Oakland softball opened a three-game metro series with the University of Detroit Mercy on Tuesday, April 18 and lost 2-0.

In the opening game of the series, Zemmer tossed 6.0 innings, allowing two with six strikeouts.

Mead led the Golden Grizzlies, going 2-for-3, while Hill, Abbey Walewski, Swanson and Miller each recorded hits.

Softball at University of Detroit Mercy: Game 2

In the second game of the doubleheader, Kownacki went all seven innings, picking up seven strikeouts and allowing just one earned run. Squires recorded both RBI singles, including the game-winner.

Hill hit 3-for-4, with Lauren Mead and Pletscher each recording a hit. Oakland stuck first, with Squires hitting an RBI single to score Hill in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

UDM added one of its own runs to tie the game in the fourth inning. In the seventh, Squires delivered a go-ahead to give the Golden Grizzlies a 2-1 lead.

Oakland held on to win 2-1.

The final game of the series will take place at noon on Wednesday, April 19.
